Massive Police Deployment In Kumawu For By-Election

The Ghana Police Service says it has put in place sufficient security measures to maintain law and order as well as ensure peace and security before, during and after today’s Kumawu Constituency by-election.
According to the Police, adequate personnel have been deployed to Kumawu and the other communities within the Constituency to support the local Police to provide security for the election.
“As part of the security arrangements, the Police this morning engaged the parties contesting the election including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and one of the Independent candidates to enhance collaboration among all stakeholders towards a peaceful election.
“The other independent candidate in the election was, however, unable to honour the invitation for the meeting. The NPP team was led by its National Chairman and General Secretary whiles the NDC team was led by its General Secretary and National Organiser. The Independent candidate represented himself at the meeting,” a statement said.
It added “We wish to assure the people of the Kumawu constituency to go about their normal activities freely including going out to exercise their civic duty of casting their vote. We would also like to urge the general public, especially the people of Kumawu Constituency to work with us to deliver a peaceful election and ensure the safety and security of all.”

President Tells Kumawu Voters

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is urging voters in the Kumawu constituency of the Ashanti Region to vote massively for the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) parliamentary candidate, Ernest Yaw Anim in the by-election on Tuesday.

According to him, the NDC has nothing to offer them hence the need for the NPP to maintain the seat.

This is as a result of the battle for the seat by the two main political parties, NPP and National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Political party bigwigs from both parties have intensified efforts in their bid to ensure their candidate wins the seat. While former President, John Dramani Mahama is making a strong case for the NDC, President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia are convincing voters to vote for their party’s choice.

Interestingly, the two independent candidates in the race are leaving nothing to chance as they are working tirelessly to cause an upset.

The atmosphere at Kumawu on Sunday, 21st May 2023 was a politically charged one as the NPP embarked on a massive rally with the president and vice president in attendance.

Speaking during the NPP’s final rally on Sunday, the President who endorsed Ernest Yaw Anim and urged the constituents to vote for him.

“The replacement for Philip Basoah is handsome, humble, and kind-hearted and is ready to serve you. He has united all members of the party in this constituency. Ernest Yaw Anim deserves to do the job. He’s number one on the ballot paper, place your thumb on where you see him, we don’t want any deceptive candidate“.

Also, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia touted the achievements of the NPP and reminded the constituents of the projects they will miss if they vote for the NDC’s candidate.

“Vote for the NPP’s candidate to go to parliament to bring development to the constituency. The NDC should know that we haven’t forgotten the dumsor era. Do you want us to experience dumsor again?” he asked.

The NPP parliamentary candidate for Kumawu, Ernest Yaw Anim also urged the constituents to avoid complacency and go out in their numbers to vote massively for him in order to ensure a resounding victory.

“Let’s all go out in our numbers to vote massively for me to win,” he urged.

The NPP’s rally was led by President Akufo-Addo, his Vice, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and other NPP stalwarts including a former Trade Minister and a flagbearer hopeful of NPP, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, former Agric Minister and a flagbearer aspirant, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, NPP’s National Chairman, Stephen Ntim amongst others.

There is a heavy security presence in Kumawu as dozens of security personnel have been deployed to the area ahead of the by-election.

The four contestants include Ernest Yaw Anim of NPP, NDC’s Kwasi Amankwaa and two independent candidates.

The leadership of the striking teacher unions on Tuesday, July 12 walked out of the meeting with government officials that was to discuss the issues that resulted in the strike, TV3’s Daniel Opoku who has been observing developments with the teacher unions reported.
Presidents of the National Association of Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Angel Carbonou and Thomas Musah respectively, who attended the meeting in Accra, told journalists after stepping out that the government’s representatives were insisting that the unions call off the strike before negotiations start.
They said they found this as a betrayal of trust hence, their decision to boycott the meeting.
Thomas Musah said “I think that what has happened today is very unfortunate. What we can say now is that our negotiation has come inconclusively and we are still on strike”
For his part, Mr Carbonou said “They are indicating and asking us to call off our strike before negotiations begin. So all it means is that the government side is not ready to continue negotiation unless the teacher unions call off the strike.
“They have held all organized labour unions hostage and this is a betrayal of trust because the understanding we had was that organized labour has been convened for us to find solution to the issue of COLA. Right now, since we are undesirable, we think that before they even walk us out of the meeting, we are walking out of the meetings ourselves.”
On Monday, 4th July 2022, the four (4) Unions in Education, namely GNAT, NAGRAT, Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana, withdrew their services in all the Pre-Tertiary educational space, to back their demand for the Cost-of-Living Allowance (COLA).
This involved both Teaching and Non-Teaching staff.
